Careers
Tora is building the training and nutrition system serious athletes have been missing: one app, research-backed algorithms, and a method we publish. We hire scientists and engineers who want their work to be checked, used and improved every day by athletes.

Responsibilities
- Use the Tora app daily to log your training, nutrition and recovery on pre-release builds
- Test each new build within a week of release and file structured reports on defects, performance and usability
- Participate in a short review call every two weeks to walk the team through your findings
- Verify fixes and confirm that reported issues are resolved
Requirements
- Regular training in a sport, in the gym or both, at least three to four sessions a week
- Clear, detailed written communication
- Comfort with technology, including installing test builds on an iPhone and capturing screenshots and screen recordings
- An iPhone running a recent version of iOS

About the role
Beta testers are the first athletes to train with each new version of Tora. You will use the app as your main training and nutrition log, on builds that are still being finished, and tell us what works, what breaks and what slows you down.
Your reports go straight to the engineers and scientists building the app. They decide what we fix first and help make sure that everything we release holds up in real training, not only in testing.
Preferred qualifications
- Two or more years of consistent training
- Experience with other training or nutrition apps is a strong advantage
- Availability for roughly five to eight hours a week, on a flexible schedule
Qualities we look for
- Attention to detail: you notice small changes and can describe exactly what happened and what you expected
- Reliability: you test new builds promptly and report on time
- Candour: you tell us when something is not good enough, and why
- Curiosity about how training and nutrition software works
Working at Tora
Tora is an early-stage company based in Vancouver, building the training and nutrition system serious athletes rely on. You will join a small, senior team where research scientists and engineers work side by side, every product decision is documented, and the methods behind our algorithms are published for anyone to review.
Hiring process
- We review every application ourselves and reply, usually within a couple of days.
- A short call about your training and the apps you have used.
- A one-week trial with an early build, followed by a short written report.
Exercise Scientist
Keep the Training Algorithm aligned with current research, and help the science team cover the field with both breadth and depth.
Responsibilities
- Review and grade new research on training volume, effort, progression, recovery and periodisation as it is published
- Evaluate the Training Algorithm’s rules against the evidence and write proposals for changes, with the expected effect and how it will be measured
- Take each change from proposal to validation with the science and engineering teams
- Contribute to the research articles Tora publishes
Requirements
- A master’s degree or PhD in exercise science, kinesiology or a closely related field
- Strong command of the resistance-training literature and the statistics behind it
- The ability to explain research findings clearly to engineers and athletes

About the role
The Training Algorithm decides how every Tora athlete trains: the exercises, the sets, how load progresses and when to deload. This role keeps those decisions grounded in the best current evidence.
You will join the existing science team and extend its coverage, so that the algorithm reflects the field as a whole rather than a narrow part of it. Your work reaches every athlete who opens the app, and the reasoning behind it is published for anyone to check.
Preferred qualifications
- Published or peer-reviewed work in exercise science is an advantage
- Experience designing or analysing training studies
- Coaching or applied practice with athletes is a plus
- Familiarity with evidence grading and meta-analysis
Qualities we look for
- Rigour: you read past the abstract and weigh the quality of the evidence
- Clear writing: a proposal from you can be understood and acted on
- Collaboration: you work closely with engineers to turn findings into product
- Intellectual honesty: you say when the evidence is thin or when we were wrong

AI Engineer, Nova
Join the AI team and keep Nova’s intelligence at the frontier of what is possible.
Responsibilities
- Evaluate new models and methods as they are released, and bring the ones that improve Nova into the product
- Build and maintain the evaluations that confirm an answer is correct before an athlete sees it
- Improve the tools Nova uses to explain an athlete’s program, nutrition and goals
- Keep Nova fast, private, and grounded in Tora’s algorithms and the athlete’s own data
Requirements
- Shipped experience building LLM products with tool use
- A rigorous approach to evaluation
- Strong engineering fundamentals in a production environment

About the role
Nova is the assistant inside Tora. It answers an athlete’s questions using their own program, sessions and nutrition, works through Tora’s algorithms, and shows the numbers it used.
You will join the AI team and keep Nova at the frontier: tracking what new models make possible, deciding what is worth adopting, and making sure every change makes Nova more accurate, more useful and more trustworthy.
Preferred qualifications
- Several years building and shipping machine-learning or LLM-based products
- Experience with retrieval, tool use and structured outputs
- Experience designing evaluation sets and measuring model quality
- Comfort working across the stack, from prompts and tools to the backend services behind them
Qualities we look for
- Judgement: you know when a new model or method is worth adopting and when it is not
- Ownership: you see changes through from experiment to production
- Care for detail in how an answer reads to an athlete
- Clear communication with research, design and engineering
